Y/A No More

When I first read a Christopher Pike book, I was in junior high and I felt naughty because the books were about teenagers who were older than I was and they were doing bad bad things like drinking and killing each other. I read every book, their covers in color, their titles and spines in neon, and the author's name in spiky sometimes raised lettering. I still remember the eerie ending of one book--the red-headed cheerleader holding a handful of poisonous cocaine under the nose of some geeky guy who was sure to die. I don't remember which book, but they all had something like that.

Now that I'm an adult, I'm so over Chain Letter and the like. Now, I've moved on to The Listeners. It's Christopher Pike for adults! Rock on, CP!!!! PrettyBird lent it to me, recalling that I read all his books as a youngin. I've gotta say, his adult stuff is the same as his young adult stuff, only involving older people and maybe a bit more mature situations. This time, I didn't feel naughty. I felt nostalgic. While The Listeners is not the best piece of literature ever written, it is entertaining, even though at times I was thinking, I can't believe I'm reading this. But I suspended disbelief as all good readers do and I delved in and came out a happier reader.

If you have any qualms with reptiles, time travel, mind melding, or twin studies, this is not the book for you. If you like a bit of the sci-fi along with the detective edge, take a peek.
